The Changing Table

Not to be outdone by Mummy in the “create things with love for our son” department, I have attempted to build a bit of furniture that we needed for our impending addition to the family.  Flynn needed a changing table and here in the UK there seems to be roughly two options for these.

  1. The full sized changing table plus shelving/drawers
  2. The changing platform that rests atop a crib

Neither of these options really worked for us as the space we have available for the changing station is going to be the counter of our bedroom bay window.  The first option was obviously too large for that and the second option was too short and would leave both of us hunched over while changing the little one.  On top of that, the second option would waste some perfectly good storage space underneath it. Our only (affordable) option therefore, was to make something ourselves.

I’d done up a couple of drafts using Google Sketchup and you can see what’s more or less the final design in the gallery. I fortunately have a good friend who’s a serious hobbyist woodworker that happily gave me several pointers on what to do in order to make this as stable as possible (thanks Ian!).

In total the whole project probably took around 12 hours over the weekend with roughly 3-4 hours spent planning and back and forth with Ian, 6 hours actually cutting, sanding, drilling and fastening the table together plus filling in the holes when that was done and a final 2 hours for painting.

Like Danni’s project, nobody is going to mistake this for an heirloom piece of furniture but I’m really happy with how it turned out and it’s exactly what we needed.  While I can’t say I’m looking forward to the terrible, terrible things I’ll see on this table, I can say that I’m proud of what I built and it was a lot of fun.  I wish I had more call for building things like this so I had an excuse to do it more often!

The First Flynn Project

We’re lucky enough to live in a world where we don’t need to make all of the clothes on our back, but I felt it would be special to make a few pieces for Flynn by hand; to infuse them with that extra bit of love only a parent can provide.

There’s no shame in admitting that I was never a very dexterous person.  Small, detailed tasks aren’t my speciality so taking on a job like this could have gone either way.  Receiving the supplies in the post was very daunting when the scale of work ahead of me was revealed, so I started with some of the smaller projects and worked my way up.

Most things, from rattles to bibs to a swaddling blanket turned out better than hoped, though we’re going to have to get some store bought booties as they proved to be my undoing.

While these small items will never be mistaken for professionally made, the sense of pride in creating these for Flynn made it all worth it in the end.  The skills required to become a good parent are wide ranging.  I can only hope to acquire as many as possible to rise to the challenges ahead!

Baby & Toddler Show

Danni found out about and purchased tickets to the Baby & Toddler show that wasn’t too far from us this weekend.  It was essentially a trade show chalk full of all the things you didn’t know you needed for your wee ones.

Fortunately we had a list in hand of the few remaining things we needed to pick up for Flynn so we didn’t go too far astray buying all of the new and shiny must-have’s for parents to be in 2016.
